What is Backie?Backie is a pesticide-free slug trap for greenhouse horticulture that was created through collaboration between gardeners and Studio Catch HS. The simple but effective design of the trap makes it possible to catch slugs on a large scale. Thanks to the use of wheat bran as an attractant, the trap can remain in the greenhouse for a longer period of time without maintenance when the slug pressure is reduced. | |
Why Backie?In Dutch cut Cymbidium cultivation, a lot of nuisance is experienced by the Ambigolimax valentianus, which even caused some gardeners to quit their profession. The current pesticides used to control this pest are losing their effectiveness due to the growing resistance of the slugs. In addition, there are increasing restrictions on current pesticides, which emphasizes the need for a new method of control. For this reason, Backie has been designed in collaboration with gardeners and, after large-scale testing, it offers a new, more effective way to combat the Ambigolimax valentianus in greenhouse horticulture. |  |

Further researchBackie is optimized for cut Cymbidium cultivation in the Netherlands, but there are many more crops that suffer from the Ambigolimax valentianus or other similar slugs. That is why we are busy investigating which crops these are and whether adjustments are needed to the trap to also help these crops.
